A young Orange County couple suffered through an infestation of bird mites and was forced to spend the night, sleeping in their car. Although the mites didn’t bite them, they found it very uncomfortable to have numerous mites crawling all over their bodies while they were in bed trying to sleep. D.J. Salamin and Joe Johnston of Termite Terry Pest Control were on hand to diagnose and correct the problem. A dove’s nest, located in a rain gutter near the back door, was determined to be the source of the problem. There was a freshly broken egg shell laying on the ground below the nest, so it appeared that the baby dove and mother had flown away from the nest. Mites are parasites and must have a host animal from which to draw blood from for their survival. So, with the doves gone, the mites appear to have gone inside the home in order to find other host. D.J. started by removing the nest and cleaning out the rain gutter. Bird droppings were also cleaned up. Areas around the rain gutter, windows, doorways and areas of the interior were carefully treated to eradicate the remaining mites so that the young couple could return home and finally get a good night’s rest in their own bed.
