Fun Facts About Christmas Songs

Christmas is almost here, so let’s look at some fun facts about your favorite Christmas songs:

  • Bing Crosby’s version of “White Christmas” is the highest-selling single of all time, with over 50 million copies sold.
  • In December of 1965, “Jingle Bells” became the first song to be played in space. While on NASA’s Gemini 6 voyage, Wally Schirra played the song on a tiny harmonica while Tom Stafford shook a handful of small sleigh bells.
  • “All I Want for Christmas Is You” was written and composed in only 15 minutes, by Mariah Carey and Walter Afanasieff.
  • In 1958, Brenda Lee recorded “Rockin Around the Christmas Tree”. She was only 13 years old!
  • Irving Berlin wrote the song “White Christmas”. He hated Elvis Presley’s version of the song so much that he tried to get it banned from the radio!
  • “The Chipmunk Song” is the only Christmas song to ever hit #1 on the Billboard Hot 100.
  • In 1952, the Catholic Church condemned the song, “I Saw Mommy Kissing Santa Claus” because they thought it promoted adultery. They backed off after the 13-year-old singer, Jimmy Boyd, explained that Santa was really just the kid’s dad.
  • “Hark! The Herald Angels Sing” and “Joy to the World” are two of the oldest English language Christmas hymns. They date back to the 1700s.

“Silver Bells” started out as “Tinkle Bells”. The songwriter, Ray Evans, told his wife about the song and she asked if he was out of his mind. She reminded him that the word “tinkle” is also slang for urination. Wisely, he rewrote the song and changed the words to say “Silver Bells”.
