The National Park Service recently issued a warning and asked for all of us to stop licking toads. This is because some people have been licking the Sonoran Desert Toads so they can enjoy a state of hallucinogenic enlightenment.
The Sonoran Desert Toads have prominent parotoid glands that secrete a potent toxin. The toad’s secretions contain a powerful hallucinogenic known as 5-MeO-DMT. It can be snorted, inhaled or smoked. The harvesting of these toads has become so popular that the species is now considered to be threatened, at least in the state of New Mexico.
These toads are primarily found in the Sonoran Desert of Arizona and Mexico. They also live in California and New Mexico. This toad grows up to eight inches in length, and is one of the largest in North America. They have a long-life span and can live between 10 and 20 years.
5-MeO-DMT is illegal to use. The U.S. Drug Enforcement Agency says there is no accepted medical use for this drug, and that it has a high potential for abuse. However, some researchers say it may help treat conditions, such as addiction, depression, anxiety, and post-traumatic stress disorder.
There are prominent public figures who have publicly discussed using 5-MeO-DMT, such as Chelsea Handler, Mike Tyson, and Hunter Biden. They claim it has helped.
Ladies and gentlemen, maybe we should leave these poor toads alone and let them live in peace. Must admit that I’ve always been a bit naïve about this drug culture stuff. When I was growing up and heard someone say they were “smoking a roach”, I’d ask myself, “Why would anyone ever want to smoke a nasty cockroach? Little did I know!
