July Is National Ice Cream Month!

    President Ronald Reagan created National Ice Cream Month in 1984. Here are some fun facts about ice cream:

  • It takes 12 lbs. of milk to make just one gallon of ice cream.
  • The largest ice cream sundae in history was made in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada, in 1988. It weighed over 24 tons!
  • The ice cream cone’s invention is linked to the 1904 World’s Fair in St. Louis. They say that the ice cream vendor ran out of dishes, so he teamed up with a waffle vendor who rolled his waffles into cones!
  • In the U.S., the average person eats an average of 48 pints of ice cream per year.
  • The average person takes 50 licks to polish off a single scoop ice cream cone.
  • The record for the largest ice cream  cake is 12,096 pounds!
  • Vanilla is the most popular flavor.
  • The major ingredient in ice cream is air.
  • Chocolate syrup is the favorite topping for ice cream.
  • Americans eat more ice cream than any other country.
  • Nero, back in 62 A.D., sent slaves to the mountains to bring fresh snow back to the royal kitchens. They flavored the snow with fruits to make flavored ice.
  • The first hand-cranked ice cream freezer was invented in 1845.
  • The Guinness book of records tells us that the largest ice cream pyramid was made in August of 2002. It had 3,894 scoops of ice cream and was made in 22 layers. It weighed 1,005 pounds and was 53 inches high!
