National Peanut Month!

March is National Peanut Month, so let’s take a look at some fun facts about one of our favorite foods:

  • National Peanut Month first began as National Peanut Week in 1941. They expanded it to a month-long celebration in 1974.
  • Peanuts are not nuts. Since peanuts are grown in the ground, they are actually members of the legume family (beans, peas, lentils).
  • Peanuts originated in South America, where they were grown by Indians for at least 2,000 years. They were introduced to America by Africans in the early 1700s.
  • There are four different types of peanuts – Runner, Valencia, Spanish, and Virginia. Texas is the only state that grows all four types.
  • The average peanut farm is 200 acres.
  • Two peanut farmers have been elected as a President of the US. They were Thomas Jefferson, and Jimmy Carter.
  • Former President Bill Clinton says that one of his favorite sandwiches is peanut butter and banana. Some say that this was also the favorite of Elvis “the King” Presley.
  • It takes about 540 peanuts to make a 12-ounce jar of peanut butter.
  • According to Little Brownie Bakers, they use about 230,000 pounds of peanut butter per week to make Girl Scout’s Do-si-Dos and Tagalongs.
  • George Washington Carver was known as the “plant doctor” and the “Grandfather of peanuts”. In the 1900s, he developed numerous farming methods and came up with over 300 ways to use peanuts.

According to a survey, the average person will eat almost 3,000 peanut butter and jelly sandwiches in their lifetime. Sounds good – make mine with strawberry jelly!
