August is National Watermelon Month and it is time to look at some fun facts about this delicious treat:
• Nearly 80 percent of all US watermelon production hails from Florida, Georgia, Texas and California.
• In 2019, Americans consumed 5.1 billion pounds of watermelon.
• Watermelons live up to their name; they are 92 percent water!
• Chris Kent, of Tennessee, holds the record for the heaviest watermelon. It weighed 350.5 pounds!
• Seedless watermelons are not genetically modified. They are a true hybrid species.
• Early explorers used watermelons as canteens.
• In Israel and Egypt, many serve their watermelon with feta cheese.
• The first recorded watermelon harvest occurred about 5,000 years ago in Egypt. Watermelons were often placed in burial tombs of kings to nourish them in the afterlife.
• The first cookbook published in the US in 1776, American Cookery by Amelia Simmons, contains a recipe for watermelon rind pickles.
• In China and Japan, watermelon is a popular gift to present to a host.
• 100 percent of a watermelon is edible, including the rind and seeds.
• The US currently ranks 7th in worldwide production of watermelon. China is #1.
• Stripes on a watermelon are indicators of the variety. There are over 1,200 varieties grown in 96 different countries, and some don’t even have stripes. Stripes do not indicate ripeness.

Our weather is getting hot and I’m starting to feel a bit thirsty. How about joining me for a glass of fresh watermelon juice? It’s a healthy choice and it is so refreshing!
