West Nile Virus Update

There have been 106 human cases of West Nile Virus in California this year, and it has resulted in 11 deaths.

The virus is transmitted to people through the bite of an infected mosquito. Those at greatest risk include seniors and people with a compromised immune system.

Mosquitoes often get the West Nile Virus from birds. Dead bird reports are one way of tracking where the virus could be spreading. If you find a dead bird, please contact the Orange County Mosquito and Vector Control District. There is no charge for their services and your help may go a long way in protecting your community.

The District is also asking for you to remove any standing water around your home. Some places to check are flower pots, saucers, old car tires and children’s toys. And, don’t forget to check your rain gutters to make sure they are clean and draining properly.

They also recommend that you protect yourself by using a mosquito repellent containing DEET, picaridin, IR3535, or oil of lemon eucalyptus. Consider wearing long-sleeved clothes and pants when outside.
