Free EPA Lead-Based Paint Orientations For Realtors and Property Managers

The cost of hiring a contractor in California will increase by up to 400% after October 1 as a result of new EPA and State lead-based paint regulations most consumers and real estate professionals are unaware of. The new rules, passed earlier this year, require any firm performing repairs, remodeling or paint work on homes built before 1978 to earn new certification and hire expensive third-party labs and disposal companies. These additional mandatory steps will add as much as two or three weeks to a typical repair job, creating costly delays in real estate transactions.

“It’s as if an atomic bomb was about to be dropped on our industries and no one is ready,” says “Termite” Terry Singleton, president of  Termite Terry Pest Control in Costa Mesa. “We work closely with many in the real estate, property management and construction industries, and we have yet to meet anyone that is ready to deal with these new regulations.” Real estate businesses have already been devastated by market downturns over the past five years, and these new EPA lead safe regulations could do even more damage. The potential loss of thousands more in jobs couldn’t come at a worse time.
