One Of The World’s Most Feared Pests Found At Airport!

The Khapra beetle, which is one of the world’s most feared pests, was recently found at Chicago’s O’Hare airport. U.S. Customs officials discovered the Khapra beetles in two ten pound bags of rice, which were brought in by a passenger from India.

U.S. Customs and Border protection says, “The Khapra beetle is one of the world’s most destructive store-product pests. It is difficult to control once introduced into a region because it feeds on a variety of dried materials, is resistant to insecticides, and can go long periods without food. Infestations can result in up to 70 percent grain damage, making products inedible and unmarketable. It originated in South Asia and is now present throughout much of Northern Africa and the Middle East, with a limited presence in Asia, Europe and South Africa.”

This pests first invaded California in 1953 and was not eradicated until 1966 at a cost of 15 million dollars.

Customs officials have intercepted the Khapra beetle 100 times this year, compared to 3 to 6 times per year in 2005 and 2006.

Our officials need everyone’s cooperation – This is a serious problem pest!
